Annual intercropping suppresses weeds: A meta-analysis

چکیده
Intercropping has been advocated as an environmentally benign method to suppress weeds in agriculture. However, it is not evident from the literature what size of weed suppressive effect achieved on average by intercropping, and how species choice crop management affect this effect. We conducted a global meta-analysis published data quantify intercropping biomass annual arable intercrops grown for their final product. searched identify all papers reporting usable experimental extracted 339 records 39 publications containing 76 independent experiments. Two metrics suppression were defined assess intercropping: ratio observed intercrop less sole (Rweak), more (Rstrong). On average, was substantially significantly (58%) lower (Rweak = 0.42) than crop. No significant difference found between crop, even though tended be slightly larger (Rstrong 1.08). Findings consistent across different groups combinations, such maize/legume small-grain cereal/legume intercrops. Intercrops with additive design had stronger replacement design. In latter, mixed arrangement gave row design, while spatial did ability designs. effects simultaneous vs. relay nitrogen fertilizer input. The Rweak decreased land equivalent but intercrops, Rstrong unrelated LER both results confirm that generally useful approach suppressing cultivation. Further work needed disentangle contributions density, traits mixing intercropping.

متن کاملHerbicides control annual winter weeds in bermudagrass turf
Weeds are commonly found in bermudagrass turf during the winter and early spring throughout the Southeastern United States whether this turf is used for lawns, parks, athletic fields or golf courses. Mild winter temperatures favor rapid growth of these annuals. When bermudagrass goes dormant in the fall after the first killing frost, it does not compete with germinating winter weeds. Bermudagra...
متن کاملImmune activation suppresses plasma testosterone level: a meta-analysis.
Females often select mates on the basis of sexual signals, which can be reliable indicators of male quality when the costliness of these signals prevents cheating. The immunocompetence handicap hypothesis (ICHH) provides a mechanistic explanation of these costs, by proposing a trade-off between immune function and sexual displays. This trade-off arises because testosterone enhances sexual signa...
متن کاملEvaluation of seed yield and competition indices for intercropped barley (Hordeum vulgare) and annual medic (Medicago scutellata)
Annual medic is an annual crop which performs well in various forage cropping systems. However availability of medic seeds is a major challenge for livestock producers in Iran. This study was conducted to determine if intercropping annual medic with barley can produce supplement medic seeds while barley grain yield as the main crop is not compromised. Two experiments were carried out at the exp...

a large number of single research studies on the effects of strategy-based instruction (sbi) in teaching english as a foreign or second language has been conducted so far. however, the lack of a comprehensive meta-analysis targeting the effectiveness of english language sbi is observed. moreover, the findings of experimental studies regarding the context of the english language, proficiency lev...
